Take Away 38 - Keep My Comments to Myself

On our recent trip to the coast, we stopped to watch a guy in his glass blowing studio. There were two women standing there with us with two small children. I made the assumption that the older woman was the grandma and made a comment about how much her granddaughter looked just like her. Nope, it was her daughter!!!!  Oops! I know better than to make assumptions like that.  I'm not sure what possessed me to open my mouth. Poor lady. Her face turned beat red. I was embarrassed beyond belief. When I tried to back myself out of it and try to make it better, it just got worse.

TAKE AWAY: Just keep my mouth shut!

  1. Oh no! I've seen that happen to my mom with Diana. When the three of us are out, people tend to assume that I am Diana's mom and that my mom is grandma. It has made for some pretty awkward moments over the years.

Don't feel too bad about it. Societal expectations haven't caught up with the fact that women are having children when they are older.

  2. Hahahah I could just see that happening. I remember once talking to this couple in a restaurant, they were from some other country and I made the assumption the wife was the mother and made some comment about traveling with her son. If only you could take back words.....once they have left your mouth there is no going back! A good lesson in life actually!

  3. I feel bad about a time I made the horrible mistake (years ago) of asking a woman when her baby was due. I was soooo sure she looked pregnant. Ugh. I wish I had a back-space and delete button for my mouth sometimes.
